The York Sport Centre

The University of York is renowned for its high-quality academic programmes and excellent campus amenities, including its state-of-the-art Sport Centre. The York Sport Centre is a multi-use facility, featuring a gym, sports hall, squash courts, athletics track, and more. With a membership base of around 2,000 gym-goers, comprising of students, staff and local residents, the York Sport Centre supports a wide demographic of users, requiring modern and functional facilities.

Brief

By 2024, the changing rooms at York Sport Centre had reached over 16 years of service and were due for an upgrade. The facilities no longer aligned with the Centre’s modern aesthetic and needed to accommodate the growing number of users with varying storage requirements. The project required a significant increase in locker capacity to support the facility’s diverse range of activities, including the gym, sports hall, squash courts, and athletics track. York Sport needed a locker solution that optimised available space, provided different locker sizes to meet user needs. The refurbishment aimed to deliver a fresh, functional design while minimising disruption to facility operations.

Safe Space worked closely with York Sport and the main contractor to deliver a seamless renovation of the changing rooms. The work, completed during summer 2024, was strategically phased to keep one men’s and one women’s changing room open at all times, ensuring uninterrupted service for users.
